In the lesson we had to go onto Vevo and choose three music videos from songs of different genre. The three I picked were 'Chase and Status ft Sub Focus - Flashing lights', 'Imagine Dragons - Its Time' and 'Kendrick Lamar - i'. After watching the three music videos we had to note different conventions we saw within them. Then finally pick the 6 main ones.
From the picture of my notes the conventions I saw in 'Flashing Lights' were: girls, drugs, alcohol, parties and cuts that follow the beat.
However in 'Its Time' I could only find lip syncing to be a common convention.
Lastly 'i' had dancing, parties, lip syncing, girls and also had an intro.
The main six that I noted down at the bottom were:
Lots of slow motion
Lip syncing
Mostly medium shots
Shots of artist/band
Cuts that follow the beat
Lighting depending on the mood of the song
1. Slow motion is used for mainly slow or sad songs to set the mood. This can also be used along with lighting to strengthen the mood.
2. Lip syncing is used in music videos to give it a 'live' feeling and to connect the song with the video and then to the audience.
3. There is mostly medium shots in music videos with bands to fit all of the members in.
4. The bands or artists are usually in the music videos mainly to connect with the audience.
5. The cuts that follow the beat are used to pull the audience in and make the music videos match the song perfectly. Lip syncing can also do this.
6. The lighting can set the mood the same way as the slow motion.
